A Minimalist Guide to Spring Cleaning
It’s that time of year again… a time for sponges, cleaners, and open windows! Spring cleaning can be a time full of rubber gloves and harsh chemicals, or it can be a time full of chemical-free cleaners and de-cluttering your home!
We’re pulling inspiration from The Minimalist during our spring cleaning this year. If you haven’t seen the movie, read the book, listened to the podcast, or kept up with the blog posts, don’t worry. We’ve summarized some information on the amazing men behind The Minimalists.
Joshua Fields Millburn and Ryan Nicodemus are men who lived the American dream- they accelerated in their careers to a point in which they were making six figures and living lavish lives… except they realized they never had time… for anything. They no longer wanted to give their lives to the pursuit of making money and instead chose a path with minimal possessions and maximum time.. for anything!
Their website eloquently explains their view of minimalism in this quote:
“Minimalists don’t focus on having less, less, less; rather, we focus on making room for more: more time, more passion, more experiences, more growth, more contribution, more contentment. More freedom. Clearing the clutter from life’s path helps us make that room.”
Josh and Ryan have found a more simplistic way to live, which is filled with more moments they’ll cherish for the rest of their lives. We strongly encourage you to look into their website, book, blog, podcast, and/or movie!
So how can we implement this into spring cleaning? Don’t worry, we’re not asking you to gut your house on the first day of spring. On the contrary, we think this process is best approached gradually!
Declutter your home and life this spring by choosing one item to donate every day from March 20 to June 20. Find a large box to place in your garage, or anywhere in your home that is less-traveled, designated strictly for your clutter. This box should be out of sight of your day-to-day life yet accessible enough to get to daily. Everything is easier with friends, so invite your group to join the movement! Then, on June 20, celebrate by planning a party! Start the day with a group donation to your favorite thrift store then head back to your decluttered home for snacks and beverages in the summer sun. Don’t forget to share your experience on social media, we would love to see your progress and party photos! Tag us at @elisons_workshop on Instagram or EliSons Workshop on Facebook!
Minimalism is easy to achieve and will strongly improve your life through simplicity and time better spent with family, friends, and the passions you don't currently find time for.
Happy spring everyone!
